Safeguarding and child safety
Last updated: 28 October 2026
The short version
- The Lab is built for students aged around 14 to 16, and some younger students in KS3.
- There is no messaging, chat or contact between users, and the AI never holds open conversations.
- No adverts, no tracking, no selling data.
- Concerns about a child's safety go to support@mathsforensics.com and are acted on the same day.
1. How the Lab is designed to be safe
- No contact between users. Students can't message each other, post comments or share content. In Incident Room games, challenges and live games show names and scores only.
- AI is limited to maths. The AI only marks maths working, checks it or sets a traffic light. It doesn't chat, can't be asked open questions and never gives answers in Check my working or Mike mode.
- Students are told when AI is involved. Every AI feature is labelled, and students are told before first use.
- Minimal data, private by default. We collect only what the Lab needs. Pictures of working are deleted after 7 days. Nothing is public.
- Encouraging, not pressuring. Feedback is about the maths, not the student. There are no public leaderboards for marked work and no adverts or paid nudges.
- Age-appropriate content. All questions and messages are written or checked by a qualified teacher.
2. Reporting a concern
If you are worried about a child's safety or wellbeing in connection with the Lab, email support@mathsforensics.com with "Safeguarding" in the subject. We read these the same day.
- For a student in a school class, we contact the school's designated safeguarding lead.
- For an individual account, we contact the parent or carer who set it up, where that is safe to do.
- If a child may be in immediate danger, we contact the police or the relevant authorities. In the UK you can also call 999, or contact the NSPCC on 0808 800 5000.
If something written in a student's work suggests they are at risk, for example a note in a photo of their working, we treat it the same way.
3. Laws and codes we follow
- UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, and the EU General Data Protection Regulation, because we are established in Spain and serve students in the UK.
- The ICO's Age Appropriate Design Code (the Children's Code).
- The EU AI Act's rules on telling people when they are dealing with AI.
- Spain's law on information society services (LSSI-CE). See our legal notice.
- Anthropic's usage policy and its guidelines for organisations whose services are used by under-18s.
We carry out a data protection impact assessment before launching features that use children's data in new ways, such as AI marking, and review it when the service changes.
